I learned this the hard way. Fortunately, this is not necessary.

Now that we've covered the basics of the algorithm, let's move on to the practical strategies I mentioned earlier.

Step # 2. Rate your current position on Google
To rank higher on Google, you need to know where you are. This applies even to new sites. Fortunately, there are several tools that can help you.

Use Ubersuggest to check your site's keyword rankings

If you've added specific keywords to the text of your page, use my Ubersuggest tool to get an estimate of your Google rankings.

Log in to your account, then use the "Traffic Overview" under the competitor report. Enter your domain and you'll see a list of the keywords you rank for, your most popular pages, and an overview of SEO Key Rankings.

Check site speed

Next, it's important to check your site's loading speed, as it's still an important ranking factor in Google.

If your site is slow, you have little chance of ranking high. It will also affect your ability to convert and sell to new customers.

When the page load time on the Walmart website increased from one to four seconds, there was a sharp drop in conversions.

If this happens, it doesn't matter what kind of internal SEO optimization you have, meta descriptions or title tags. The search algorithm will punish you, even if you are a giant like Walmart.

Walmart.com found that when a website's load time increased from 1 second to 4 seconds, conversions plummeted. And for every second that website load time decreased, they saw a 2% increase in conversions.

To find out how many visitors are visiting your site, sign in to your Google Analytics account and view the Acquisition Channel report.

Organic traffic conversions

In addition to analyzing search traffic, it is worth paying attention to the keywords that drive traffic to your website. It's harder to see than it used to be, but still possible.

One way to find them is with a simple tool called SERP Scan . I use it to identify keywords that drive natural conversions for my site.

SERP Scan will show you the keywords that have been driving organic traffic to your site in the last 12 months. You will also see a chart of your keywords for internal SEO optimization.

This tool makes it easy to get the data you need from Google Analytics and understand the big picture regarding keywords on your site. But you still need more information.

Keyword Ranking for Commercial Queries

The number one mistake in keyword analysis is not spending enough time on commercial keywords. 

Commercial keywords generate revenue. To improve your search engine position and make money, you need to understand the difference between commercial and informational keywords.

If all of your keywords are informational, you will still be driving organic traffic, but it can be difficult to convert those visitors into buyers or people who repost on social media.

The results show the most important elements to look out for when analyzing site links:

Unique Active Links : The number of links that directly or indirectly affect Google rankings. "Unique" means the links are from different IP addresses. This is one way to identify a natural link. These links have been indexed by Google in the past 90 days.
Nofollow Links : Problogger has 10.2% of nofollow links, which equates to 1522 out of 14,922 links to the site. Google introduced the rel = "nofollow" tag in 2005 to prevent spam comments on blogs from artificially affecting rankings. After the release of the Penguin update, it became necessary to diversify the link profile. And, as Matt Cutts mentioned, you need a mix of dofollow links (which pass link power to search engines) and nofollow links (which do not pass link power).
Scope : If you've read Problogger's content, you might think the site's niche is "blogging" or "internet marketing". But if you look at the analysis, it turns out that this is a media site. Knowing the scope will help you identify relevant links that will improve the link profile to your site in the search engine used by the search engine.
Link Impact Score : Shows how links from a site affect the ranking of inbound pages in search engines. The higher the score, the better. As a very popular and influential site, Problogger has a whopping 99% rating! Check your site and see what your metric is.
Anchor Link Text : Click on a link in the menu on the left to access the anchor text (anchor text is the text that becomes your link and points to the page) that leads to your site. Google has released a Penguin update to prevent site owners from manipulating search results with exact match anchor text. If you don't want to be under the threat of search algorithm penalties, diversify your anchor text.

It's also important to know which links are harming your site so you can remove them. Malicious links include the following:

Coming from sites PR-n / a or PR 0
These are mainly cross-links
Come from domains with low traffic
Coming from sites with the same IP class address
Coming from web pages with a lot of external links
There are many free tools out there to help you spot bad links. Two tools I've tried: Monitor Backlinks and Linkquidator .

Remember to export the list of malicious links as soon as you find them. This way you can come back to them later.

Clean up your link profile to avoid being penalized by Google

This is the next step in cleaning up your link profile, and there are two ways to do it.

1. Request manual deletion of the link. Go to the site where the bad / unnatural links are coming from and contact the site owner. Ask him to remove the link (the best option) or add a nofollow tag to it.

The first step is to contact the company or freelancer you hired. If this is not you, but a predecessor or a company with which you entered into a contract, then find the original agreement. If you have to, trace the path of the money.

When you check for unnatural links to a site, you have the option to export the links found. If you did, download the file and click Finish.

Like you, Google cannot remove links because the system does not have access to the referring sites.

3. Diversify the anchor text . Anchor text can play a key role in improving or completely destroying your search rankings. As I mentioned earlier, if you want a natural link profile, you need to diversify your anchor text.

Keep these types in mind when circulating text:

Exact match : Does the anchor text exactly match the keyword you're targeting? e.g. hybrid bikes
Phrase : is there a keyword in the anchor text? like how to find the best wireless headsets
URL : This is a simple link creation with a full URL like http://crazyegg.com
Brand name : Here you use the brand name for the anchor text, which makes the text look natural, like Apple AirPods .
Branded Keyword : This is where you combine the anchor text with your site's keyword, like getting started on content marketing.
